Dare to Dresden Blog Hop {Plus a Giveaway}

Today is the day!  It’s my day on the Dare to Dresden blog hop hosted by Madame Samm and Christine from Quilt Monster in My Closet!  A huge thank you to both of them for organizing this event.
This is my first time to participate in one of Madame Samm’s hops so I’m super duper excited.  I thought this would be a super simple project for me.  Boy was I wrong!  My brain just did not want to cooperate.  I think I tried to hard to come up with something “different.”  I really didn’t want to make a traditional Dresden.
I do have a couple blocks to share.  I’m not sure I love either one of them but I think that’s ok.  I’m sure I’m not the first person to make something they don’t love.  We can’t always be successful at everything, right?  The first one is probably my favorite.
What do you all think?  It’s not bad but just not exactly what I had pictured in my brain.
Here’s attempt number two.  Warning…this one is definitely not a traditional Dresden.  I had to paper piece this one.
Hannah said this one reminds her of something out of Candy Land.  I like the concept of this one but I need to tweak it.  It isn’t exactly what I had pictured either.
I do have one project that I’m super proud of…The Cube pincushion.  I think I must have used up all my Dresden energy when I created this one.
Hopefully you can see the Dresdens on the corners.  You can find a tutorial for The Cube here or download the PDF here.
I hope you all aren’t too disappointed with my Dresdens.  I kinda feel like I let you guys down but hopefully not.
Make sure you check out all the other hoppers…

And I have one last nugget of goodness…we’re giving away an EZ Dresden ruler to one lucky winner.  This is a very handy little ruler when it comes to making Dresdens!

You don’t have to be a follower to win, although we’d love to have you stick around and get to know us.  Just leave us a comment to enter.  You can earn an extra comment if you want to pin a tutorial or quilt from our blog or tweet the giveaway.  Just leave separate comments.

I hope you all enjoyed my weird Dresden blocks.

  1. Who could be disappointed in your Candy Land and the cube pincushion, both stunning spins on the Dresden! Can you hear my printer spitting out the pincushion pattern, LOL! Thank you for sharing, the great giveaway and the great pattern. jbechosend at sbcglobal.net

  2. I am a follower and I think your blocks look fine. I’m a new quilter so I haven’t tried anything too complicated yet. In fact, I’m still collecting stash!:)
    Love the cube pincushion too.

  3. Oh no dont be worried I think these are all fantastic! Definately different which makes them stand out all the more – I love the candy one and those boxes are super cute. Thanks for sharing.

  4. I’m not normally a big fan of dresdens, but I really like your takes on all of them. I’d be more likely to do something like the first one, even though the second one is my favorite. What a weirdo I am 😉

  5. Love both of the first two Dresdens – especially the one with the off centre circle, that is quite unique. Your boxes are fantastic and I can just see the little Dresdens on them.

  6. Vicki-Love your Dresden #2-is there a tutorial for that? I like new adaptations of traditional blocks. From CA, thanks for sharing.

  7. Thanks for the tutorial for the cube. I’m looking for fun projects for our guild’s next quilt show in June 2014. This looks like a great candidate. Your Dresdens are great! You are very creative. Thanks for the great giveaway. Moreover, thanks for participating in the blog hop and the inspiration.

  8. I L-O-V-E your Dresdens, especially the second one. It is so cool! I think the cube is a great idea. Love the Dresden on the corner. But don’t enter me in the giveaway, I have one of those rulers and I’m sure someone else needs one too.

  9. I love your dresdens! Every dresden has their own look and place and even your creations are great because they are so unique!
Thanks for the chance to win!

  10. That first dresden (pink, teal and cream) is AWESOME and I’d love to give it a try myself. I already have my own dresden tool, so don’t put me in your contest. The second one is also truly creative. The cube is cute, but both of your OWN designs are what caught my eye! Thanks for sharing.

  11. How could you possibly say you let anyone down – That cube is fantastic !!!!!!!! And ….thank you so much for the Giveaway – I am really wanting to make Dresden’s now – I could really use that ruler & a cube pincushion made following your PDF – Wonderful post !!!!

  12. If anyone leaves your blog this morning disappointed, then they didn’t come for positive reasons to begin with! I bet your dresdens take one of the top 3 honors for today!

I cant choose a favorite!I love them all!

I may make one of your cubes for a swap I am in!

  13. Super Dresden love it!! That second candyland design is a true delight. It just makes my heart go pitter patter and it needs to be followed thru into a quilt design for SURE!!!

  14. Are you kidding that you don’t think your own Dresdens are just fabulous? I like things that are different. They are all great and what a useful and interesting pincushion. I’ll have to check out that tutorial on that one.

  15. Definitely enjoyed your weird dresden blocks! Love the white text fabric and the double circle on the first one. (And I’m in the same boat–so far, none of mine have turned out quite like I intended. Still working for my day on Thursday!) And the cube! Oh my! That is fantastic!!

  16. Your Dresdens are WONDERFUL! What were you thinking..letting me down..NO WAY! and a free pattern to boot! Can’t wait to make one of those pinnies! I have a swap partner that will LOVE IT! 17. Vicki, I really love your Dresdens. They’re gorgeous! The second one looks like a candy lollipop. I could see it appliqued on a baby quilt. It would be so cute. Great job. Thank you for sharing and for the great giveaway.

  18. I really think your dresdens and very creative and pretty just as they are. Sometimes the finished piece might not be what we thought in our head but that does not make it perfect just as it is. Have fun playing with the patterns and making more new designs. Love the cube pincushion … thanks sew much for sharing and for the free pattern … 🙂 Pat

  19. They are very interesting takes on dresdens! I tend to like more traditional dresden plates, but especially the second one is interesting. Thanks for the chance to win!

  20. I love them all. You totally succeded. Nothing shabby about these. They are all fabulous and I would be proud to say I had made them. You do realize we are allways our worst critic.

  26. I love what you came up with, the second one has tons of awesome potential! (ps. don’t pick me, I already have 2 wedge rulers and one lost one 🙂 )

  27. I think all of your blocks are marvelous. Don’t know why you are disappointed, but if they are not what you pictured in your mind, I would like to see that picture. Saw your cubes earlier, but couldn’t remember which blog I visited. Glad to come back to them on this trip.

  28. Far from being disappointed , your blocks are lovely , and yes the second one does look like a peppermint candy ,sweet! The pincushion is adorable , thanks so much for sharing your talents and being a part of the hop:-)

  29. You made some terrific Dresden blocks!! I love them!! When I bought one of those rulers for my sister, I should have got one for myself (silly me!), anyway, lady luck might be on my side and that would be sweet!!

  30. The top Dresden reminds me of a windmill flower – totally adorable. I love your second Dresden – outrageously cool and definitely one I want to make!!! Reminds me of a vortex and I want it!!!!! Shush those negative comments cuz they are wrong, I tell you, WRONG!!!

  31. I think your blocks are amazing! Especially the paper pieced one. And how creative with that pin cushion…you really should be very proud of yourself…go girl!

  32. I think your blocks are great. Especially the second one. The Dresden on the corner of the blocks is so cute. I would have never thought of that. Thanks for sharing. If I win the ruler, maybe I will try a Dresden block. Who knows. I want to try something new each month this year. I am a very happy and loyal follower, sort of like your own Lassie dog.

    Beth

  35. love your candy land dresden! i need piecing practuce … this will be fun. thanx for the idea and the chance at your ruler – mine is 23 inches long and awkward
to use to cut small fans.

  36. I just love the pink and white – who cares if it’s not traditional. It’s fantastic. And the pincusion is just adorable. Thanks for playing (and don’t enter me in the giveaway, I have one already and am also giving one away on my blog today – it is great, isn’t it??)

  37. All your dresdens are wonderful. The “candyland” one is really fun. Wouldn’t a whole quilt of those in different colors be so cool? Did you draw the paper piece pattern or find it out in blogland?
    Great job.

  38. You have made a fun Dresden- I like your paper pieced one.
Thanks for the terrific cube tutorial. It looks like a great pin cushion.
Thanks for participating in the blog hop.
    Regards from Alberta,
    Anna

  39. I really appreciate your honesty in posting about something that turned out cute but with which you’re not thrilled. I think too often, as readers, we think that because we see only fantastic finished pieces on blogs and can understand how pleased their creators are with them, that there is never a different outcome. Which can be intimidating. Your post is a welcome bit of reality–nice to see that it’s okay not to be head over heels over everything, even if I do think your pink and white block is outstanding.

  40. Vicki ~ I really like both of those blocks you made. And your pincushion cube I really love. I was in JoAnn’s last weekend to buy supplies for my office chair that feels like I’m sitting on a big rock and since I was in that area of foam, I checked for the cube. Nope. JoAnn’s doesn’t carry that so I still need to look somewhere else. Oh well.

  41. Disappointed? Holy cow, more like totally inspired! These are incredibly awesome!!! Thank so much for sharing, and for the beautiful pincushion… it’s also amazing and I will definitely be making one soon
    …I’m now a happy follower°Ü°

  42. Your creative juices went into overdrive…amazing creativity. I’m luv’n the parade of Dresden projects on this blog hop. Thanks for the inspiration. Happy stitching, Pauline

  43. I thing both dresden blocks look very modern and are both awesome!
Your pincushion cubes are really neat! I am making one in the morning! Thanks for the inspiration!
